So, with Rampage, that does it, from January to April, we have watched (nearly) every movie with my faves in them.
It was only ten movies but I tried this in 2016 and didn't get too far. Hey, celebrate the small things.
There were TEN movies in all.
Technically there should have been TWELVE, but I was not going to see Sherlock Gnomes for anything and thought Acrimony was coming out in July.
Also, I was not going to watch a Tyler Perry movie for anything.
Just because I'm black doesn't mean I watch his movies.
Oh God, no.
Two of them - Annihilation and The Cloverfield Paradox - were through Netflix.
Two of them were Disney and directed by black directors -
- Black Panther (Dir. Ryan Coogler)
- A Wrinkle in Time (Dir. Ava Duvernay)
January had the fewest films with just Proud Mary.
February had the most films with The Cloverfield Paradox, The Female Brain, Black Panther, and Annihilation.
The month's mood.
(Actually, there were two but one has a movie we didn't count).
- A Wrinkle in Time
- The Hurricane Heist
9 out of 10 films were science or sci-fi related, the sole outlier being Proud Mary.
Cloverfield Paradox, A Wrinkle in Time, and Proud Mary are the only films eligible with totally periphery faves, people whom I won't physically go out of my way to watch a movie for them, but I will give a chance to because they're in it if it doesn't inconvenience me a whole bunch.
In weird retrospect, I kind of don't do that with Tier A faves. I guess those are just people I like more.
Paradox and Wrinkle is the only one with two periphery people (Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo for the first, Gugu and Chris Pine for the latter).
On the flip side, Black Panther is the only one to have two people who make this movie eligible (Lupita Nyong'o and Michael B. Jordan).
Moving on the other side of this Rubiks-Cube of connections, there were two movies that were director/actor reteamups.
- Black Panther - Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler, previously seen in Creed and Fruitvale Station, and teaming up once again for Wrong Answer.
- Annihilation - Oscar Isaac and Alex Garland, previously seen in Ex Machina.
This movie was only missing Domnhall Gleeson.
Two (Paradox, Pacific Rim Uprising) were sequels**.
Ironically, the OG Pac Rim had another Tier A fave whose character did not make it into the sequel.
Hey the movie is five years old.
Three people were in more than one movie for this period.
- Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Cloverfield Paradox, A Wrinkle in Time)
- Toby Kebbell (The Hurricane Heist, The Female Brain)
- Emily Blunt (Sherlock Gnomes, A Quiet Place)**
The most successful movie financially was (Are you sitting down?) Black Panther, with over 1$ Billion worldwide and 600$m + in North America, making it the most profitable solo superhero movie of all time. As well as the #3 movie domestically of all time.
On the flip side, after three weeks and going from 2200 theaters to 128, with only 6$m as of March 25th, I think we can say The Hurricane Heist is probably in last place here. Better luck next time.
Though one could also argue that the last place slot truly belongs to The Female Brain but that only got released in one theater in North America. Bit unfair.
Three opened at #1
- Black Panther (duh)
- Pacific Rim Uprising
- A Quiet Place
- Black Panther (97%)
- Annihilation (87%)
- A Quiet Place (95%)
Well, this was very fun! Kind of painful at points. But there was always an element of fun. Slightly. At points.
Come back in July when we get ready to go Film There and Back Again.
** Sherlock Gnomes would be included in this if we counted it but we're not gonna. But we're gonna list it in this section anyway because, Emily Blunt.
