Book Look: Fairy's Got Talent (Really, it's a Character Spotlight) - Faybelle Thorn

We interrupt the crawling through the visual medium to talk about one of the books in the series, my favorite book in the series; Fairy's Got Talent by Suzanne Selfors.

And why is it my favorite? Because not only is it entertainingly written, it focuses on my favorite character in the EAH World; Faybelle Thorn, Daughter of The Dark Fairy in Sleeping Beauty.

I couldn't wait until Chapter 3, I had to talk about The Best Girl immediately.

Faybelle Thorn is the ace student; Captain of the Cheerhexing Team and Villain Club. She's ready to go out there, do it all, and raise hex! She can't wait to deal in her destiny, and when Justine Dancer puts together a play that has an evil fairy role, why, she must be just perfect for the part! Right?

Perhaps not, as Farrah Goodfairy is interested too. And it's a lot easier to play characters that you aren't. So Faybelle tries to put her out of action, but ends up overextending herself and making a big mistake.

First of all, Faybelle's voice comes through wonderfully in this book. She's not necessarily hateful of others, she just knows that she's better than them. Friendship and romance aren't at the top of her goals, success and legacy are. She's happy working and doing every thing she can to put on the fairytale equivalent of a college application. But instead of wondering if she will get a job, she already has one as the future Dark Fairy. Even if Briar doesn't take her destiny, she's still going to be a very big deal. I love her!

But she's not unfeeling or cruel;

“This might have surprised some, but being a villain did not mean that Faybelle was incapable of love. Quite the opposite. Faybelle felt things deeply,“and she loved her family with the ferocity of a fairy. Fairy hearts might be smaller than human hearts, but they beat with a rhythm that is powered by magic. Fairies are capable of love without measure.
But so, too, are they capable of the darker emotions, also without measure.”

Visually, her early description had her with midnight-blue hair. Which would have been a little tacky and overwhelming; platinum blonde is much better

In Dragon Games, she acts as an underling to the Evil Queen in hopes that she can improve her destiny, never mind the fact that it's stated that The Dark Fairy is pretty much #2 in terms of evil legends. Unsurprisingly, that doesn't work out...

In Epic Winter, she does learn to loosen up a bit and work with others without losing any of her haughtiness or personality. Why Apple and Maddie got dolls from that special and she didn't where she had a far bigger role, I will never know.

8 A Quiet Place Day One

    It's carried by Lupita, because the narrative doesn't have the strongest punch to really get across its themes.
