Film in 2018

Wins, losses, duds, triumphs, we had everything in the year 2018!

Every film released in 2018 that I saw will get a shoutout, so keep reading.

Movie I Thought Was A Humongous Improvement Over Its Predecessor: Ralph Breaks the Internet

Movie That Tried Its Best - I Think: A Wrinkle In Time

This is apparently a very difficult property to adapt, and as I've never read the book, after about an hour and a half I was completely lost. The CGI is ugly. But it is diverse and has a nice message for black girls so, yay, small wins.

Movie that Ignored Solar Power to Great (Dis)effect: The Cloverfield Paradox

I don't want to talk about it because my notes are just as confused as I am - still.

Fun fact! There are still several movies, but I have no idea if I can get to them by the end of the year. So, here we are.

Most Depressing (But Pretty) Metaphorical Movie about Depression: Annihilation

Very sad this flew under the radar. I don't believe it was "Too Smart" for audiences around the world. Theater distributors didn't want to give it a chance.

Glorified Music Video (With Visuals That Make it Worthwhile): Mandy.

Film With Popstress Who Will Be Nominated For Best Actress: A Star Is Born (2018)

The more I think about this movie, the more I don't think a theater watch was imperative for it. But I can't take it back now.

Most Muddled Message: Incredibles 2

I'm not as hateful of this film as many people, but what was the message? Don't depend on cops - I mean, Supers? Design your house better so the Supers Hotline is in the saferoom and not your bedroom? Screens are bad but the time the movie takes place is when screens aren't as widespread as they are today? Please don't let me live in a world where this wins Best Animated Feature.

Movie That Improved Every Aspect - Except One: Pacific Rim: Uprising

I'm not Fan #1 of the original Pacific Rim - It's fine to me. Love the spirit and youth of Uprising, but why did you have to kill Mako?

Most Wasted Potential: Hotel Artemis

Lovely setup, great cast, awesome aesthetic, half-assed execution. At least Sofia did not die in this one!

Movie That is Probably the Best in the DCEU and the Only One I Actively Enjoyed: Aquaman

Movie I Enjoyed More Than Nearly Everybody Else: Ready Player One

It's a massive improvement upon the book, toning down a lot of the skeevy "Nice guy" bits while translating the challenges to a visual medium in a way that made sense. And it looked really awesome, even on my laptop screen.

Movie I Can Sum Up in Two Words: Fahrenheit 451. Stylish. Boring.

Better Rom Com With The Youth That Continued the "Different" Trend: Love, Simon

Between genuine laughs and concern mixed with fear, this was one for the ages. Why Fox didn't release it in June (Pride Month) is beyond me.

Movie I Watched To Scope out 4/5ths of the Animated Categories: Isle of Dogs

The charm is in the visuals. Not the story or characters.

Movie I Saw Because of Hype and Not Genuine Interest But Still Kinda Enjoyed: Avengers: Infinity War.

Movie Based Off of A Commercial/Documentary: Uncle Drew.

Movie in the Vein of Harry Potter that 90% Of People Have Never Heard Of: The House With A Clock In Its Walls.

The production design is so pretty, with a cozy, old-world charm and danger. It's based on the first book of a surprisingly long-running series from the early 70s.

Movie That Improved The Flat Main Characters of The Book: Crazy Rich Asians

John M. Chu gave Nick and Rachel (and arguably Astrid also) personalities while making sure they wouldn't be overshadowed by forces like Eleanor, with transitions and visuals that make for a beautiful, poppy Rom-com.

First Director Wunderkind Movie: A Quiet Place.

The more I think about this, the less I like it, but I still like the attempt. But because it's an actor's first movie we have to pretend like it's the pinnacle of filmmaking. There are good ideas and good execution, just the worldbuilding raises some questions. I look forward to the sequel.

The Almost-Triumph For Black Superhero Movies: Black Panther

"Almost Triumph" is unfair, frankly I loved this movie even with it's Marvel shortcomings (The final battle and the very ugly CGI at points). It's still a humongous accomplishment - Because whoever expected rhetoric and discussion about the diaspora to happen in a MCU film?

The "Fifth Time is Kind of The Charm" Movie: Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

It was funny, but not uproariously funny. When will Warner Animation Group craft jokes around the world they're in instead of relying on self-aware meta humor? It just seems like they have nothing else to say.

Well, that's not meta, but it is funny. [src]

Movie I Realized Two Minutes In That I Had Made A Terrible Mistake But I Already Paid 6$ For The Ticket So I Had To Stay There: The Hurricane Heist

You know me, I loved Geostorm. It was the perfect mix of stupid and spectacle. This, unlike what most people will tell you, isn't "So bad it's good" - It's downright incomprehensible.

When people can understand each other shouting over a category 5 hurricane but I can't understand shit coming out of anyone's mouth or the grey blob spectacle on the screen, you failed on every conceivable level.

A Movie Better Than It Had Any Right To Be:
 Peter Rabbit

It's not top tier of anything, and we could always use less animals singing contemporary music, but it is funny, in a spiteful kind of way. I love spite humor!

Popular Film That I Saw & Am Indifferent To: To All The Boys I've Loved Before.

Movie with A Wolfbat: Rampage

That's it, the only highlight of that movie was - Flying. Wolf.

Favorite Movie of The Year and Possibly Of All Time: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

I just reviewed it so I'll gush about it on a personal level.

Animation style(s)! Afro-Latino lead! Culture! Style! Believing in yourself! Being yourself! Doing it like you!

Don't be shy, but don't be a dick either.

8 A Quiet Place Day One

It's carried by Lupita, because the narrative doesn't have the strongest punch to really get across its themes.
