Chapter 3: Fairest on Ice / Heart Struck

Poppy and Duchess find themselves in the most hexciting skating event to forever after grace the pages of an Ever After High yearbook.

They're really digging the timeskip here - last episode, it was fall, and now welcome to winter. I'm going to resist the urge to point out every time my backgrounders show up. No promises.

They're at a snow lodge conveniently located like ten miles away from the school.

Ashlynn is spinning and dancing on the ice - this was actually a line of dolls. Ashlynn - who was pretty beautiful, Poppy - who was okay, and Duchess - who was outstanding.

They were unofficially Walmart exclusives, and had very poor distribution at that.

Anyway, Tiny is skating too, and he cracks the ice.

Duchess shoves Bunny and Alistair out of the way - to her, ice skating is just like dancing on her pond.

Well knock me over with a fairy feather, Duchess Swan and Faybelle Thorn actually have some interaction in the visual media!

Remember, Duchess' journal says she's best friends with Faybelle. Maybe it's a frenemies thing.

"Fun" Fact: Faybelle never got a second doll. This is a crime against humanity. Well, I don't like it and i'm part of humanity so it's a crime against me.

It's especially jarring considering she gets a fair amount of screen time for the rest of thes series, especially in Epic Winter, where she has a fairly big role. She could have came in a playset with the sled she enchants. And it's not like her outfit could not have been made - it is literally a palette swap of Apple's, who got a doll, and no more than about ten lines in the movie.

 Fuck you, Mattel.

Anyway, the two love trying to show one another up, but Duchess basically goes "lol U WISH." and does a lot of fancy spins.

The Yearbook War is still happening;

Duchess calls for people to nut up and challenge her, and Poppy is apprehensive, but Holly tells her to go for it. "If you give into fear, then fear wins." Thanks for stating the obvious.

Skating? In a pencil skirt?

She flails all over the ice, and Duchess considers the challenge accepted

Why is this so funny.

Poppy is really just trying to not die as Duchess antagonizes her.

Voguing.

Meanwhile, Ashlynn is living her best life.

Well, for now. Her Mirrorphone is in and her eyes are closed, meaning she's a very talented but slightly obtuse skater, as she doesn't notice the crack on the ice growing bigger.

Poppy and Duchess are now sliding down a path that leads from one pond to the other, both panicking. But Poppy chooses not to give into fear.

The two go flying off a ramp and run into Ash, just as she's about to fall in the hole.

Duchess compliments (???) Poppy, and Ashlynn says they were all rather lucky today.

Out of all the "strictly advertising" webisodes, this one was always kind of strange to me. It's much more obvious. Maybe because it was so damn hard to even get the dolls.

Heart Struck

Misguided love is in the air after Hunter unwittingly fires off a few of Cupid’s magical star-crossed arrows.
It's springtime now! Which means Cupid gets a new outfit - and allergies!

Cupid drops her bow and arrows and goes to get her inhaler. See, if Cupid can use a health aid, so can Apple, Mattel.
Hunter, in his Tricastleon getup, find them, calling them 'awesome'. Going to return them to her, he gets distracted by some targets, and give firing the arrows a go.

Of course, they're not normal "puncture your skin" arrows, but magical, love finding arrows. Cupid is the adopted daughter of Eros, after all.

His arrows find targets, like the gruffy billy goat from Apple's Class Confusion (To a troll), Professor Rumplestiltzkin (to Baba Yaga), and a Goat (to his sandwich)

Apple and Raven are working on the yearbook, along with Duchess, Alistair, and Bunny. The arrows fly in, and nail everyone in the room, including the three and some staff-backgrounders & Corrine.

I like how the Orc-Guy is just very politely trying to detach...oh, what name did the artist call her? I thought it was Lina.

Having properly medicated herself, Cupid sees the affects of lovesickness all over the school

Better not let catch Avalon see you, Roland. & we do see that yellow and blue girl on the far right again. Nice. And Ophelia is just "Um, ok."

Ashlynn and Hunter show up, and the former pushes the latter toward him - "I think Hunter has something of yours, Cupid."

Ash has the best faces.

Apple asks if she can do anything to make everyone normal, but Cupid says she can't - but she does have an idea.

You are tearing my backgrounder couple apart, Guru Studios!

In the Castleteria, Cupid hands out Mood Roses "That only cherubs like Cupid can grow", and there's a short lesson on flower language, which basically puts everyone right by straigtening out their feelings for each other.

It was a fine enough episode but I need to see that my backgrounders are together again in the next episode - or, the one after the next one...

  1. I've literally only seen the "Fairest on Ice" dolls once, and in the most out-of-the-way Walmart ever. The designs were STUNNING in this episode.

And yes, it's a crime against humanity that Faybelle never got another doll. She was HUGE in the series after a point; as the one truly villainous(-ish) character of the recurring cast, she was probably the most fun character for the writers to use. So she shows up constantly. And NO DOLLS *sob*!!

Cupid's Heart Struck doll was FANTASTIC, but I swear to God it shelfwarmed for like two years where I live. That probably sunk her terribly- I don't think she ever got another line of dialogue in the series after this. Which is a tragedy- her crush on Dexter was HILARIOUS.

Don't be shy, but don't be a dick either.

8 A Quiet Place Day One

It's carried by Lupita, because the narrative doesn't have the strongest punch to really get across its themes.
