So, Sonic The Hedgehog Moved.....

.... To a very crowded February, 2020.

Specifically, February 14th, 2020.

Valentine's Day.

I like to think it's a call back to this but probably not.

Why? Because the director wanted to redo Sonic after the internet clowned on him en mass, as if they really couldn't just take one of the models from the newer games, spruce it up, and put it in.

Not that simply, engines and whatnot differing between games and movies, but....it's not as if they didn't have a model to go on besides making him look like a child in a Sonic costume.

But I'm not here to talk about Sonic going fast into a new release date; I'm here to talk about how crowded of a month it will be.

I will do a 2020 In Film preview in around October, when more dates are finalized, but a lot of things in February are already pretty set, and that's our target for this post.

7th - "Birds of Prey" / "Peter Rabbit 2"

"Peter Rabbit" was an success for Sony Pictures Animation. Critically okay (I genuinely enjoyed it), it clearly made enough money to justify a sequel.

2018 was a great year for SPA, between this and the best movie of all time, "Spider-man: Into The Spider-verse".

"Birds of Prey" is the latest entry in the "Fuck continuity, I do what I want." segment of the DCEU. It will have been awhile since the last superhero movie (Probably "Joker")

Putting "Sonic" a week after this means parents are going to be wondering; "Do I see the talking bunnies or do I take my kids to see the alien hedgehog who may or may not look terrifying as fuck still?"

It depends on how old the kids will be, or if your family has mixed-ages.

14th - "Sonic The Hedgehog" / "Untitled Kingsman Movie" / "The Photograph"

Probably not a lot of crossover between the three.

20th - "Bloodshot" / "Call of The Wild"

I didn't know until right now that "Call of the Wild" was a mix of animation like "Peter Rabbit 2". These three movies are going to cannibalize each other.

I still think this is an insanely random spot to put "Bloodshot", but it's not as if they could put it in November 2019 between "Dark Fate" and "Knives Out", despite the superhero gap. What would be so different between the 3 essentially?

And then "Jumanji 3" comes out in early December

In retrospect, looking at the rest of the schedule for 2020...that's probably the best place it could be. Not like anyone is going to see it besides myself, for reasons you can probably guess if you look at the cast list.

Really hope this is gonna be .... not "Fantastic 4".

If you don't know what "Bloodshot" is, it's from a Valiant comic from the 90s.

SO, WHAT DO YOU (I) THINK?

Essentially: Move "Birds of Prey" to November 2019 if possible.

  • Counterprogramming to "Frozen 2", sort of. With holidays, there's a chance you can get people like myself to see both.
Or: Move "Call of The Wild" to November
  • Counterprogramming for those parents who impose gender roles on their children and don't think boys would want to see the singing princess movie.
